History of R. Maresch & Son

Three generations of the Maresch family have been helping collectors with their collections.  Dr. Richard Maresch became a stamp dealer in 1924 in Vienna, Austria, moved to Canada in 1938, opened his first stamp store in 1942, joined the CSDA in 1945 and attended such international shows as the Vienna International Philatelic Exhibition of 1933 (WIPA ’33) and the first CAPEX 1951. The firm held their first mail auction in 1957, first public auction in 1963, and first live internet auction in 2019.

William Maresch was a founding member of the V. G. Greene Philatelic Expertizing Committee and co-author of the Canada Specialized Stamp Catalogue (1973 -1988). The firm was the first to use a computer for an auction sale in 1983. Their large retail catalogue, Maresch by Mail, was launched in 1987, a busy year which included the firm as CAPEX ’87 official auctioneer.

Like his grandfather and father before him, Peter entered the firm at a young age and helped grow the family business. In 1996, the Maresch website was launched and the firm was the CAPEX ’96 official auctioneer. 2017 saw the launch of their internet only auction, and in 2019 the firm hosted their first live internet auction.

As Canada’s oldest stamp firm, R. Maresch & Son is proud to be the official auctioneer of CAPEX 22 and looks forward to meeting you in Toronto in 2022.
